Clerkship offer day Tuesday 11 October - Extended Drop In Hours

Published 10 Oct 2016, 4:03 pm, by Melbourne Law School Career Services

Clerkship offer day: Tuesday 11 October

As you may be aware, clerkship offers will be made on Tuesday 11 October and we understand that many of you will be feeling anxious or excited about what's to come.

We would like to remind students that it’s important to try to keep things in perspective, and to recognise that clerkships will not define your career pathway or future opportunities. There are many different options available to students and graduates outside of the clerkship process.

We understand that it can be a stressful day when receiving news about the outcome of your applications. MLS Career Services will be offering additional support and are extending drop in sessions on Tuesday 11 October.

We welcome students to come along to the MLS Student Enrichment Centre between 9am and 5pm on Tuesday to discuss the outcome of their applications, or to chat about career planning beyond clerkships. We will also be available via email at law-careers@unimelb.edu.au

Please note that normal drop in times resume from Wednesday 12 October.

The County Court are seeking volunteers to assist with the 2016 'Court User Survey'.

Published 6 Oct 2016, 3:35 pm, by Melbourne Law School Career Services

The County Court are looking for students to volunteer their time to assist with gathering data for the 2016 'Court User Survey'.

In 2010 the County Court adopted The International Framework for Court Excellence which is a quality management system designed to assist courts to improve their performance. Performance measurement is a key component of the Framework and the first of the Framework’s eleven core court performance measures is ‘court user satisfaction’. Data gathered from the survey will be critical input to our strategic planning and improvement process.

Student volunteers would be needed to encourage court users to partake in the survey, explaining the purpose of the survey (a script will be provided) and assisting any court users that made need help.

The involvement and exposure to the Court would be a valuable experience for law students.

The survey will be run over one day on 24 November 2016 and the student(s) can volunteer for either a three hour shift or a full day.

To register your interest and/or for further information, please contact Michaela Diano, Project Coordinator - Case Management at the County Court via Email: Michaela.Diano@countycourt.vic.gov.au or Phone: 03 8636 6526

Australia–Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons Victim Support Officer (applications due 27/9/2016)

Published 26 Sep 2016, 3:31 pm, by Melbourne Law School Careers Services

The Australia–Asia Program to Combat Trafficking in Persons (AAPTIP) is a five-year (2013–2018) AU$50 million initiative of the Australian Government that aims to reduce the incentives and opportunities for trafficking of persons in the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) region.

AAPTIP builds on Australia’s long-term support for programs to strengthen the criminal justice response to human trafficking in Asia. These programs include the Asia Regional Cooperation to Prevent People Trafficking (ARCPPT; 2003–2006), and the Asia Regional Trafficking in Persons (ARTIP; 2006–2013) project.

AAPTIP focuses on the prosecution pillar of anti-trafficking at the national and regional level. Support will be provided to the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), and partner countries Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

AAPTIP will strengthen the criminal justice response to trafficking by: enhancing regional and national investigative and judicial cooperation on trafficking cases; strengthening legislative frameworks; providing adequate support for victim-witnesses; and expanding the evidence base for policy development and decision-making.

The new Victim Support Officer position will provide increased support to maximize the quality, impact and reach to all eight AAPTIP sub-programs (national and regional) through assisting the Regional Victim Support Adviser (RVSA) and program team. In particular, the Victim Support Officer will help the RVSA to follow up with the AAPTIP country offices on work plan implementation, especially in Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, where AAPTIP has either victim support specific projects, or it will work with NGOs/partners to implement victim support related activities.
