Boston Consulting Group - Demystifying Consulting Workshop

Published 25 Jul 2011, 1:51 pm, by Amy Harrington

"What is management consulting about?" An introduction to the life of a management consultant

Curious about management consulting, but not sure what it really is? On Monday 22 August, BCG Melbourne is holding a 'demystifying consulting' workshop for undergraduate students to answer this question and more.

During the half-day workshop, you will meet BCG consultants, learn about their experiences and hear what management consulting entails.  The workshop includes a session on communications and presence skills by a former NIDA trainer, and the opportunity to live the case experience in a session run by BCG Associates (people like you who were recruited by BCG on graduation).

Drinks, nibbles and a relaxed atmosphere are all part of the package!

Places are limited so we invite you to submit your CV to Mary Katergaris at katergaris.mary@bcg.com by no later than Thursday 11 August. Successful submissions will be notified by email.

Quotes

Numerous University of Melbourne students participated in this workshop in 2010 and here are just a few student quotes post last year's workshop…

·         This was an excellent workshop - it had impact and lasting value. Nicholas' instruction was fantastic.

·         Provided invaluable insight into the small things you can do to understand yourself better and present yourself powerfully.

·         Offered a brilliant mini simulation of developing & presenting a strategy.

·         Highlighting the importance of presence and listening in personal and business communication.

·         The workshop was excellent: it was very effectively organised and we gained a lot in short time.

·         More of it! Was a fantastic day. Thank you!

Seasonal Clerkship applications - Mention your mentor!

Published 25 Jul 2011, 11:19 am, by Amy Harrington

Always seek your mentor’s permission to include them by name.  Even if you don’t mention them by name, you can use words along the lines of:

  • Participated in the 2009 Melbourne Law School Mentor Program.  Run by the MLS Careers Office, this  program supports students’ formal academic training by providing a link to the profession and the practical realities of working in the law.
  • Mentored by eg senior executive at a high profile mining company/ senior partner in a law firm/senior barrister.
  • Include the type of activities you have been involved in with your  mentor eg attending court or conferences, job shadowing, meetings with clients or general career planning discussions.

Be prepared to speak about your mentoring experience at interview.

Finally, why not ask your mentor if they are happy to be a referee for you?
