Australian Academy of Law - Notice of annual essay prize 2018

The Australian Academy of Law is pleased to announce the offering of its Annual Essay Prize for 2018.

The Prize is open to anyone, wherever resident, who is studying or has studied legal subjects at a tertiary level, or who is working or has worked in a law based occupation. There is no limit by reference to the age or seniority or experience of, or position held by, a person who may submit an entry. Accordingly, judicial officers, legal practitioners, legal academics and law students are all eligible to submit an essay.

The amount of the Prize is $10,000.

The essay topic for the Prize in 2018 is as follows:

“Rights and freedoms under the Australian Constitution: what are they and do they meet the needs of contemporary Australian society?”

The deadline for the submission of an essay is 31 August 2018 and persons intending to submit an essay must notify the Academy of that intention in writing via the Academy’s website to be received by 30 June 2018. Both of these time limits are strictly observed, as the Rules Governing the Annual Essay Prize make clear.

Ideas for Careers: Law Reform and Policy

Monday, 23 April 2018 (5:30pm-7pm)

How can you put all that you’ve learned as a law student, graduate or new lawyer into context? The Ideas for Careers series has been developed for just that purpose.

Focusing on law reform and policy, this session will give you an idea of what everyday working life is like in this area, as well as the opportunity to ask questions. This is a great way to discover how your skills might fit within law reform and policy and to meet new lawyers working in various law reform and policy careers.

After the panel discussion, you’ll have the opportunity to break up into small groups to have an honest discussion about the benefits and challenges of a career in this area, and take part in an interactive law reform case study problem solving session with our panelists.

With a special guest moderation, The Hon. Marcia Neave AO – please come along and listen to, meet, and learn about law reform with the following fantastic speakers we have:

  • Lucy Adams, Manager and Principal Lawyer – Homeless Law, Justice Connect
  • Jesse Taylor, President, Liberty Victoria
  • Meghan Fitzgerald, Manager of Social Action – Policy and Law Reform, Fitzroy Legal Services

2018 BCG Scholarships - Now welcoming Applications

BCG invites applications for its 2018 Scholarship; two $20,000 scholarships will be awarded to current penultimate year university students in Australia or New Zealand. LL.M. Hyman Tarlo Scholarship 2018/19

Trinity College Dublin's School of Law, Ireland's oldest and most prestigious Law School, is pleased to announce the Hyman Tarlo Scholarship in Law for 2018/19. 

The scholarship is open to all Australian nationals, who will, by September 2018, have attained an undergraduate or graduate law degree in an Australian university. 

Applicants can apply to any of the four though Masters in Law (LL.M>) programmes offered but the School of Law for admission in September 2018. 


The scholarship covers full LL.M. tuition fees in the academic year 2018/19 and a stipend of AU$10,000. 

Applications close 31 May 2018.
