GPA information for seasonal clerkship applications

Published 8 Aug 2012, 3:33 pm, by MLS Careers Office

We have been receiving a number of enquiries from students asking the Law School to provide information on their GPA, weighted averages and ranking for inclusion with their clerkship applications.

The information that the Law School provides with respect to average results for 2010-2012 in compulsory subjects can be found at http://www.law.unimelb.edu.au/jd/current-students/assessment-and-results/2010-2011-results-averages. Law firms will expect to see your full transcript of results to date with your application. The information on this website can help put them into context that you or a potential employer might find useful.

In addition, you will be able to calculate your GPA for yourself from your individual subject marks. If all of the subjects you have completed are equally weighted (i.e. all 12.5 points), your weighted average mark will simply be your average mark.  There are several systems of calculating a GPA , so students should confirm with the firm which system they are referring to if the firm requires a GPA. This does not require reference to the Student Centre as Melbourne Law School does not have an official GPA system.

The Law School also does not provide students with their indicative ranking for clerkship applications.  It provides indicative rankings to current students under certain limited and defined circumstances only, where they are required for particular purposes (for example when students are applying for certain degree partnerships) (for example when students are applying for certain degree partnerships).  Most clerkship applications do not require students to provide their ranking. However, if you are able to provide evidence that your ranking is required for an application, the Student Centre will consider your request.

Please note that all  students will be able to receive their final ranking after the completion of their degree.  Please refer to the following webpage for more details: http://www.law.unimelb.edu.au/jd/current-students/assessment-and-results/recognition-of-student-academic-excellence

G08, 1pm-2pm

Thursday 9 August

It is important to recognise the role self awareness plays in determining your career path. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What kind of lifestyle do you enjoy? How important is status in your job?

In this seminar facilitated by Professor Ian Malkin, Senior Lecturer Wendy Larcombe will speak on the importance of well being during study, and we will also hear from three JD graduates on how they examined their own motivations and aspirations when deciding on a career in law.

Simonette Foletti, graduate trainee at Herbert Geer

Simonette first studied Arts majoring in Philosophy at The University of Melbourne where she became very interested in ethics. She worked at a medical college for a few years and became interested in medical ethics and medical law. Before beginning the JD in 2009, Simonette wrote a book about different approaches to the good life. She began her Traineeship this year at Herbert Geer where she is working in Projects and Construction in her first rotation.

Chris Rose, trainee at the Office of Public Prosecutions

Prior to enrolling in the Melbourne JD in 2010, Chris completed a Bachelor of Arts at Monash University in 1994 and a Bachelor of Letters (Honours) in Philosophy at Deakin University in 1996. Chris subsequently pursued an academic career in philosophy and media studies, before entering a number of roles in the public service. At the end of 2011, Chris completed his JD and, in 2012, commenced a legal traineeship at the Office of Public Prosecutions, Victoria.

Lee Carnie, graduate at the Federation of Community Legal Centres for 2012/2013

Lee Carnie finished the JD in 2011 and is currently undertaking the law graduate scheme at the Federation of Community Legal Centres.  She has previously volunteered at the PILCH Homeless Persons Legal Clinic and Seniors Rights Legal Clinic, the Federation of Community Legal Centres and the Human Rights Law Centre and currently volunteers at the Fitzroy Legal Service, the Fitzroy Learning Network and the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.
