Job Shadowing and unpaid work distinctionPublished 4 Sep 2012, 12:41 pm, by Helen Green Many students are currently participating in "work shadowing" opportunities organised by their mentor. This may vary in duration from a few hours to a week or more. This is encouraged as a useful career insight and students will be covered by the University's insurance whilst participating. Job shadowing is essentially where students follow their mentor and observe their work or that of their colleagues. It may involve accompanying your mentor to court or to a meeting. In line with the Fair Work Act 2009, it is important to note that work shadowing DOES NOT extend to students engaging in unpaid work for their mentor or participating in tasks a paid employee would normally be engaged in ie answering phones, preparing research papers. Any student feeling uncomfortable about a task assigned to them by their mentor, should contact Helen Green, Career Programs Consultant h.green@unimelb.edu.au The Australian Consumer Law: Evolution or Revolution, Thurs 13 September G08 @ 1pmPublished 4 Sep 2012, 9:00 am, by Helen Green
