Towards Eliminating Nuclear Weapons Conference (Adelaide: 3-4 November)

Australian Red Cross is pleased to announce it is co-hosting a conference that will advance the debate on the urgent need to develop a legally binding tool to prohibit and eliminate nuclear weapons.

The three over-arching themes of the conference are:

  • Humanitarian and environmental consequences
  • Where to from here with respect to legal frameworks and the geo political context
  • The role of civil society and governments and the practical and creative means available to them to work towards the elimination of nuclear weapons

The keynote speaker is Judge C.G. Weeramantry, Panel Judge on the 1996 International Court of Justice "Legality of use or threat of use of Nuclear Weapons" Advisory Opinion.

The Global Perspectives Summit (GPS) is a three-day student-run program which provides participants with the opportunity to develop, share and debate ideas relating to the theme of managing the challenges to growth. Participants will hear from leading thinkers in their fields, along with young professionals who are combating these challenges, and will undertake workshops to develop skills and consolidate thinking. If you are interested in sharing ideas, learning more about leading projects that you are passionate about and listening to amazing speakers share their ideas and experiences, GPS 2012 is for you.

The theme of this conference is "GPSx2012: Growth, Collaboration, Changemaking." The mission of GPS is to empower our delegates to become changes makers and entrepreneurs of the future. We strive to provide important stepping-stones and to initiate meaningful ventures and lasting change. The LIV Young Lawyers Section (YLS) in partnership with the College of Law is offering an exclusive opportunity to one final year law student to complete their Practical Legal Training (PLT) complimentary at the College of Law during 2013. The College of Law program is an accredited course of practical legal training for admission as an Australian lawyer in Victoria.

To be in the running eligible entrants need to submit a piece of writing (1000-1200 words), addressing the question: If you were Attorney-General for the day what law would you reform and why?
