Ideas for Careers – Seminar Series – July – September 2015

Ideas for Careers is a new seminar series designed to assist law students to put their learning into context.  By the end of the seminars you will gain a better understanding of what it takes to practise in each area and have the opportunity to listen to a panel of three professionals at various stages in their careers talk about:

  • What a day in that practice area is like
  • What kind of clients they work with
  • What matters are commonly dealt with
  • Career progression and more

To support you during the busy clerkship application period, Melbourne Careers Centre at MLS will be running a series of workshops to help you write your cover letter and resume, and to assist you to prepare for an interview.

Law drop- in session schedule

Please note that there has been an update to the daily law drop- in sessions for semester 2, as follows:

Monday 1pm to 2pm

Tuesday 10am to 11am

Wednesday 11am to 12pm

Thursday 3pm to 4pm

Friday 2pm to 3pm

If you would like your job application documents reviewed, such as a resume or cover letter, please bring along printed copies to the drop- in session.

PREPARING FOR THE LIV CAREERS FAIR – 1ST JULY 2015

After a quick scan of the websites of some of legal firms attending the LIV Careers Fair this year, the Careers team put together a list of some of the things employers say they want to see in their graduates:

you will understand and embrace our strategy…demonstrate global thinking and commercial acumen…provide the highest standard of service to clients…have energy to absorb new concepts and changing laws…law students who have a friendly and down to earth style of engaging with others…who enjoy a challenge and seek new opportunities…who like taking responsibility and getting things done

Being ready to present yourself in a way that demonstrates your skills and understanding in these areas is key to successfully connecting to employers at the Fair.  Keeping these areas in mind and working through the following activities will assist you to get the most out the Careers Fair.

Know which employers you will target -  Do your research – not just the websites, everyone will do that.  Consider using Libguides to extend your research.  Up to date knowledge about firms and the profession in general is confidence boosting.

Know how to introduce yourself - Spend time prior developing your 90 second personal introduction and be ready to answer questions from employers. It can help to practice with a friend or family member - introducing yourself, talking about your studies, future aspirations, work experience and areas of interest.  Remember to create a great first impression with a firm handshake, good eye contact and professional dress.

Know the questions you will ask - Prepare your questions to ask, avoiding questions that can be answered from the firm’s website.

Prepare your CV and Cover Letter - Particularly if you wish to undertake a mock interview at the Fair.  Assistance available through the Careers team - daily drop in sessions and seminars in July/August.  Details via Law Online

Women in leadership scholarship and internship opportunity
