Dean's Community Leadership Forum - Applications close this Friday (24 June)

The Dean invites law students to apply to attend the inaugural Dean’s Community Leadership Forum in semester 2, 2011.

Date: Thursday 4 August 2011

Time: 9am -4pm

Place: Board Room, Level 10 at the Melbourne Law School. 

This exciting full day Forum will give a small group of selected students the opportunity to meet highly regarded community leaders and hear from them about their own leadership experience and challenges.  Students will be able to network with the speakers and each other to discuss a range of important topics including how to enhance advocacy and law reform strategies; philanthropy and donor relationships; creating strategic partnerships; grassroots campaigning and new media. There will be a focus on learning about and developing specific leadership skills.

Please write a one-page letter addressed to Associate Professor Miranda Stewart, Melbourne Law School, describing your engagement in community activities and why you would benefit from attending this exclusive event.

Email your letter to law-careers@unimelb.edu.au.  Please write Dean’s Community Leadership Forum in the subject heading.

Applications are due by Friday 24 June. Students whose applications are successful will be notified by Associate Professor Miranda Stewart by Monday 25 July.

Changes to SOL - how to get advice

The Commonwealth government has recently made some changes to the Skilled Occupation List.  Barrister and solicitor have been reinstated to the list.  Full details of the changes are available on the DIAC website.  The Careers Office will be holding a lunchtime seminar on how the changes affect law students on Wednesday 17 August (full details will be on Careers Online shortly).

ALSA Judges Associate Guide 2011

Quick document reviews

Over the next few weeks the Careers Office will be offering short consultations so that you can have a quick review of the documents that you will submit for seasonal clerkship applications.  These are booked in the normal way on Careers Online.  Please bring a hard copy draft of the document you want reviewed.

Seasonal Clerkship Workshop

To help you prepare for seasonal clerkship applications the Careers Office will be holding an evening seminar, the Seasonal Clerkship Workshop, on Thursday 23 June from 5.30-8.00pm in the Law School. 

Refreshments will be served after the seminar (7.30-8.00pm) - this is a great opportunity to hear from firms about what they are looking for in candidates and to talk informally with them over refreshments.
