The Australian National Internships Program is a hands-on opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate students to undertake a policy-focussed internship and research project for which you will get significant academic credit.
Through ANIP, Australian and overseas university students from any discipline can be placed with the Australian Federal Parliament, the Australian Public Service, the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly or Public Service, or with non-government organisations (including lobby groups).
The Australian National Internships Program is located on the campus of The Australian National University (ANU) in Australia's national capital.
Who is eligible?
ANIP is open to any enrolled tertiary student, studying at any Australian or overseas university. You may be either an undergraduate or a graduate student from any discipline.
Former Interns have been students of political science or policy studies, Australian studies, social work, painting or music, economics or commerce, science, law, geography, development studies, linguistics, environmental studies, psychology, history, Asian studies, journalism and recreation.
The minimum requirements for eligibility to apply to ANIP are that you are currently enrolled as a university student and permission has been granted by your home university for your internship to be officially credited to your degree. Students must have successfully completed at least their second or sophomore year of university studies (96 units or equivalent) before entering ANIP. You should also have an excellent command of spoken and written English.
Entry to ANIP is highly competitive and selective. You must have at least a Credit average, and standards are usually higher. However, all applicants are considered individually, and the comments of your referees are given particular weight. So make sure you select - and advise - your referees before you apply.
The major component (between 70 and 80 percent) of your final grade for the Internship will reflect academic assessment of your written report. We will help you with general academic support but note that this is a demanding Program - hence the significant academic credit you will receive.
All students accepted by ANIP will be required to enrol at ANU for the period of their internship.
