Please be advised there has been an employment scam targeting international students.

The scam involves individuals applying for a data entry role through an employment website, such as Indeed.com.au. The employer contacts the student via email offering them a potentially more senior role.

Upon acceptance of the role, the student is sent a contract. The student is asked to sign the contract and complete personal details. They are asked to supply copies of identification and banking information. It is notable that the contact will only be via instant message on Skype or a similar service.

It is advised that students carefully read any agreement, and be aware of details that a genuine Australian employer is likely to ask for, for example, a tax file number and superannuation details.

Students should be cautious of any employment arrangement that is reliant upon their personal details, for example, name, address and phone number, to complete financial and banking transactions.

Failure to do so may place students at risk of becoming unwittingly involved in criminal activity.
