The Study Melbourne Language and Internship Program offers Victorian students the opportunity for language study, cultural engagement and an internship placement in a globally reputable company in Beijing or Chengdu.

The program includes three weeks of language study at a Chinese university, followed by a five-week internship placement. Through this program, participants will build on their Asia capabilities and become business, cultural and educational ambassadors for Victoria.

Please note that this is a non-credit bearing opportunity

It provides:

  • 60 hours of Mandarin training
  • Placement in a non-paid internship
  • Accommodation for 8 weeks

Students are required to fund:

  • meals and personal expenses
  • flights & transportation in-country
  • visa fees & processing


Eligibility

The program is open to currently enrolled Victorian tertiary students, international and domestic, aged 18 and above. All discipline areas and industries will be considered, including public, private, not-for-profit, and creative and academic industries. Students must be:

  • Able to travel to China for the program for two months (December 2018 and January 2019)
  • 18 years or older
  • Enrolled full-time at the University of Melbourne. Students graduating at the end of 2018 are not eligible to apply.

Indicative costs
Indicative costs to students (outside of Department funded elements) are estimated approximately around $3,000 AUD and summarised here, though students will need to make their own individual assessments based on their circumstances and preferences:

  • Flights: $1,400 return (Cathay Pacific, some are cheaper)
  • Travel insurance: $250 for two months
  • Visa: $200
  • Food and personal costs: $1,000

The program takes place in China from early December 2018 to the end of January 2019 - exact dates TBC.

How to proceed?
The University of Melbourne is able to nominate five to ten student candidates. Applications must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, 23 September 2018 and will be assessed by the University. The shortlisted candidates will then be asked to submit a further application to Study Melbourne which will include video responses to set questions.
